Chief Financial Officer
The Spartanburg Academic Movement (SAM) is both a nonprofit organization and a community movement founded in 2013. Funded by private and corporate donations and grants, SAM works to ensure Spartanburg County’s children and youth reach academic and life success by convening partners, aligning resources, and driving equity.
POSITION SUMMARY: The Spartanburg Academic Movement is seeking an experienced Chief Financial Officer (CFO) who can passionately and successfully lead the Spartanburg Academic Movement’s efforts to grow and scale our work as a leading backbone organization in Southeast region. This position is responsible for directing financial, accounting and administrative activity of the organization, including facilities management. S/he exercises discretionary power in significant matters and is designated the officer in charge of the organization’s daily activities in the Chief Executive Officer’s absence. S/he serves as advisor and counselor to the Chief Executive Officer on all financial, investment, and operational issues.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following:
Financial Management & Reporting
Responsible for financial reporting and communication to trustees, divisions, and SAM administration. Develop and maintain timely and accurate financial statements and reports that are appropriate for the users and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
Actively monitor cash flow position, investments, internal controls, policy and procedures, conformance with the funding agreements and all applicable laws, regulations and best practices.
Assist the CEO and Board Treasurer in communicating financial reports at Board and committee meetings. Cultivate a culture of financial transparency by ensuring communication with the CEO and Board members is clear, concise, and comprehensive.
Develop and implement internal financial controls and accounting policies and procedures; monitor for compliance.
Oversee preparation of supportive information for the annual audit and liaise with the Board’s Audit Committee and external auditors as necessary.
Manages the annual development of the budget and provides ongoing fiscal and budgetary management.
Prepares cash flow projections on a quarterly basis.
Oversees the reconciliation of all bank account(s) on a monthly basis.
Maintains a ledger of fixed assets, records additions and disposal, and ensures depreciation is calculated accurately.
Develops and maintains sound federal grant policies necessary to implement federal and other grants and investments the Spartanburg Academic Movement may receive. Files all necessary financial reports and works closely with program directors to ensure proper spending of funds.
Oversees RFP process and procurement for vendors, including but not limited to audit and accounting firms, technology firms, 401(k) and benefits advisors.
Grants, Funding, & Investment Management
Assume responsibility for effectively managing internal grant awards. Establish and ensure compliance with SAM policies and donor regulations.
Provide accurate and timely reporting on the financial activity of individual funds/projects. Analyze data to identify trends and problems.
Oversee the financial reporting for national grants, which currently supports the Blue Meridian Partners Place Matters Investment and StriveTogether.
Monitor for compliance with all grant funded programs to include federal, state, local, and foundation funded programs. Ensure all necessary reporting is completed as required.
Operations & Continuous Improvement
Supervise operational staff, including finance, communications, internal and external grants, contracts, and support staff.
Ensure operations are managed effectively and instill a continuous improvement mentality within the organization. Evaluate processes and procedures and recommend or lead changes that will impact the quality of services and operational efficiency.
Minimize organizational risk by consistently monitoring risk management policies and procedures.
Collaborate with Development staff in assisting with program budget development and management.
Assist with the communications plan as needed. Collaborate with Development staff to periodically review and adjust the communications plan.
Participate in short-term and long-term strategic planning efforts, engaging with the Executive Team and the Board in determining key priorities and initiatives that will aid in accomplishing organizational goals.
Organizational Leadership & Engagement
Represents the Spartanburg Academic Movement in external meetings and at community events.
Build excellent relationships and provide exceptional service to SAM Board of Directors, Committee members, donors, SAM team members, key partners, and community members.
Act as primary liaison to the SAM Audit and Investment Committees in coordination with CEO.
In collaboration with the CEO, hire, train, and develop operations staff. Evaluate performance and provide professional development training as well as coaching/mentoring to improve performance.
Maintain strong internal relationships with the SAM staff.
Be an active participant and supporter of SAM’s special events and employee activities.
Performs additional duties as assigned by the CEO.
Position Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required. Master’s degree preferred.
Designation as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is preferred.
Seven (7) or more years of progressive leadership experience required, preferably in nonprofit organization or foundation accounting, including several years of supervisory experience.
Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) is required.
